Prayers at the Anámnesis
The following are contemporary language versions of prayers taken from the liturgy of the Anámnesis, or Mass, according to the use of the Society of the Catholic Commonwealth. Some may find them useful in their private devotions at the Eucharist.
IN THE name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
V. I will go to the altar of God.
R. To the God of my joy and gladness.
GIVE judgement for me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people: * deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked.
For you are the God of my strength: why have you put me from you? * and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppressed me?
Send out you light and your truth, that they lead me: * and bring me to your holy hill, and to your dwelling.
That I may go to the altar God, to the God of my joy and gladness: * and upon the harp will I give thanks to you, O God, my God.
Why art you so full of heaviness, O my soul: * and why are you so disquieted within me?
Put your trust in God: * for I will yet give thanks to him, who is the help of my countenance, and my God. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to Holy Spirit : * As it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever Amen.
V. I will go to the altar of God.
R.. To the God of my joy and gladness.
V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R. Who made heaven and earth.
V. Will you not turn again, and quicken us, O God?
R. That your people may rejoice in you.
V. Show us your mercy, O Lord:.
R. And grant us your salvation.
V. O Lord, hear our prayer.
R. And let our cry come to you.
Let us pray.
ALMIGHTY God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse our thoughts and our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that with reasonable and single minds we may enter your Holy of Holies: through Christ our Lord.
WE PRAY, Lord, that following our heroic forbears in the Faith especially those whose relics we here venerate, we may be made worthy heirs and fellow citizens in the Kingdom of your Son.
RECEIVE, O Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, this bread of our lives, now made spotless by your Son's atoning power, and which we offer unto you, our living and true God; and may this offering here be lifted up to your eternal Kingdom within the resurrection and ascension of the same your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
WE OFFER to you, O Lord, this wine of our lives, humbly imploring your mercy: that you make this offering to have its portion in the eternal humanity of your Incarnate Son at your right hand in glory.
O GOD, you wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully renew the dignity of human nature; grant that in and through this sacrifice we may be made partakers of his divinity, who emptied himself to share our humanity.
O LORD Jesus Christ, through this sacrifice you have graciously received the bread and wine of our humanity here offered, into your Incarnate Life, risen and glorified: return now, we pray, yourself to us within this Holy Communion of your Body and Blood; and with yourself, entrust into our hands our own lives again, here consecrated and made one with you.
LET the partaking of your Body and Blood, O Lord, Jesus Christ, to which, by the enabling action of the Holy Spirit.. we now draw near, fill us with that power which belongs alone to you; that going forth in the eternal virtue of these Holy Gifts, to garner more of human life within the blessed order of your Kingdom here in earth, we may return a richer and a more perfected offering when next we bring our bread and wine to your Anamnesis,
I WILL receive the bread of heaven, and call on the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
GRANT, Lord, that what we have taken with our mouths we may receive with singleness of mind and heart: and in this temporal gift may partake of your eternal power.
LET your Body, O Lord, which we have taken, and your Blood which we have drunk, cleave to our members: and grant; that no stain of sin may again find place in us whom you have refreshed with this pure and holy sacrament.
LET this our bounden duty and service be pleasing to you. O Holy Trinity: and grant that this sacrifice, which by your grace we have here offered, may be acceptable to you. and through your mercy obtain your gracious favour both for us and all for whom it has been made. Through Christ. our Lord.
